Product Description
Designed to work with most iPod models, the ICF-C1iP clock radio accommodates standard iPod adapters, but does not require their use. An adjustable backstop mechanism ensures that the iPod fits snugly and securely to the clock radio’s 30-pin connector. An included wireless remote control provides full access to the iPod’s menu, as well as to radio tuning and volume functions. Additionally, the unit charges the iPod while it’s docked.
Sporting a full-function alarm clock, users can wake up or fall asleep to content on their iPod, the radio or a buzzer. When first powered on, the clock will automatically display Eastern Standard Time, which easily can be changed to other time zones as appropriate. The unit also has automatic Daylight Savings Time adjustment, eliminating the need to reset the clock in the spring and the fall. Adjustable brightness control over the LCD display provides easy readability.

7 Review for the Sony ICF-C1iP Dock with Clock for iPod
I bought this unit in black and it fits my needs (almost) perfectly. I wanted an alarm clock/radio iPod dock for my new 3rd gen Nano (also black). Lots of other similar docks use the universal docking adapter which is great, except the nano only ships with the white one. Trust me, a white universal dock adapter on an otherwise completely black speaker system looks just ugly! Anyway this unit allows you to use the universal adapters, however they are not needed (even says as much in the instructions). The adjustable backrest extends perfectly far enough to become flush with the (very thin) 3rd gen Nano. This means your iPod is fully supported every time you mash those buttons, so there is no fear that you are flexing the dock connector. I have not seen many other iPod speaker docks designed like this, but I think it’s a very innovative feature. 5 stars for Sony on this one!
Other plusses include good radio reception (comes with both AM and FM antennae) with 15 presets (10 FM and 5 AM), dual alarms, and fully functional remote that even lets you change menu levels and scroll up and down (not just track advance and volume adjustments). You also never have to set or change the time, just tell it your time zone (I believe they come factory shipped set to EST). You can also set the alarm volume level for the iPod or radio, but it doesn’t have a gradually increasing alarm volume (or gradually decreasing sleep volume).
However if you have an issue with needing a completely dark environment for sleeping you might find the display too bright, even on the dimmest setting, as you cannot turn the display off. No problems for me though. Only complaint is the placement of the clock is a bit too low, so if the clock is placed too close to my bed I usually can’t see the time from far away as it’s obscured by my covers. But that’s only a minor gripe.
The Sony ICF is fully compatible with my barnd new 160GB iPod Classic, and Sony includes instructions for using the iPhone as well. Sony has done an excellent job with the ICF-C1iP. It is an upright design, with most of the unit behind the iPod, in a slanted design with controls at the top. The iPod dock accepts universal adapters, but they aren’t really needed as Sony has an adjustable supporting plate behind the iPod.
The Sony ICF-C1iP includes a remote control that lets you completely control the iPod menus as if you were manipulating the scroll wheel. Quite impressive.
The blue-backlit clock is located in the iPod dock area, and 3 brightness levels are available. In my experience, even the lowest setting is a bit too bright, but not enough to disturb me at night. I wish that the display were slightly larger, although the high contrast lets me see the time without my glasses from a reasonable distance.
And, unlike most iPod clock radios, the radio reception is outstanding - with an external AM antenna provided. The unit has dual alarms, which can be set to iPod (you can even select a wakeup volume), Radio, or Buzzer.
On the downside, the battery backup for the buzzer alarm and clock is a small expensive lithium battery. And, if your relying on just the buzzer to wake you up it’s not very loud. You also have to be careful when changing the alarms to make sure that you don’t accidentally turn the alarm off. But all of these are minor issues. However, these are all very minor issues that don’t detract from the unit overall.
All in all, in my experience, this is the best iPod clock radio you can buy.
I agree with previous posters. The clock is great in many ways. But the brightness of the display, even at the lowest setting, at night is maddening. I don’t know that it’s enough to warrant a return, but I’m thinking about it.
Well, I tried a fix for the brightness problem, and I must say I’m very happy with it. I took a piece of scrap window tint and cut out a rectangle, the size of the display window.
Viola! Looks absolutely perfect, and at night, it is the perfect degree of dimness!
Oh yeah, I’m DEFINITELY keeping it now!
Hi Ray,
Could you please let me know where you bought the ICF? I am thinking of buying it from Circuit City. They are sellig it on special at 75$!!!!
I bought mine at the Apple store. But it was for full price. If you’ve got a chance to get it for $75, you should jump on it with both feet! Good luck.

I really wanted to like this product. It had everything I was looking for. The sound quality was good (not great, but good for something of this size). The remote works great, and the iPod integration is well done. It’s very easy to use.
But in the end I decided to return it. The problem is the display. It has three brightness levels, but even at the lowest setting I found it to be way too bright. It really projects light out into the room, to the point where it casts shadows on the walls and ceiling. It’s actually hard to look at during the night until your eyes adjust to the bright light. Yet during the day, it’s almost impossible to read unless you are looking at it straight on. Since the main selling point of this product over other iPod speaker docks is the clock radio functionality, this is a fatal flaw.
