5 Review for the Altec Lansing inMotion iM600 Portable Audio System for iPod
My roommate bought this for me for Christmas and I honestly do not know how I listened to music without it. It makes everything so much easier. I now have the flexibility to listen to any song I want through my ipod. Ok so I had that ability before just using headphones but I’m coming from the world of home stereos and boom boxes that were bulky, you know the kind you dreaded having to move. This piece of perfect pleasure fits comfortably on a tiny shelf in the bathroom. Takes up little space on my kitchen island. Ideal in the living for weekend house cleaning marathons. The sound quality packs a punch. It’s a clear / controlled / crisp sound that is especially noticeable with digital sound. Extra benefits are a remote control, A/C Adapter which when you leave your ipod attached to the base both the dock and ipod will re charge [time saver alert!!]. It also has an FM Radio Receiver built right in. I want everyone to know there is no problem with splurging. I actually talked myself out of buying one of these things which is why ultimately my roommate had to get it for me. I told myself well setup is going to be hard and it s probably going to require me to install some program on my computer it ll be too big for my tiny room I couldn’t have been more wrong. It is none of those things and shaping out to be the best way to get through my new year.
Cheers!
I got this for my wife at Christmas and, like many of you, I did a considerable amount of research and reading of reviews. I was convinced this was the best product for the price and after several months of use I’m very impressed with this product.
I was looking to replace our kitchen CD/Tape/Radio player and my wife listens to NPR quite a bit so I needed to at least have a FM radio in the unit. Right away the very expensive Bose unit was not an option. The IM600 has a great footprint for the kitchen, sound is fantastic, FM radio reception is great, and the iPod fits perfectly - I’m very very happy with this purchase. Bonus - I didn’t buy it for the cordless power option, but that has turned out to be very handy for moving the unit to any spot in the house when the kitchen gets too noisy.
I rarely write reviews, but I’m that impressed with the sound, function, and value of this product, I felt compelled to share my story.
I purchased this for my office. I wanted to be able to play my ipod songs and when comparing it to similar products, liked the FM radio capability that the others didn’t have. This is a perfect size for a desk and the quality of the speakers is great! I’m very happy with my purchase and would recommend it for anyone looking for a purchase for this type of product at a very reasonable price!
It exceeded my expectations. I was looking for some cheap speakers for use in an office, and decided to splurge a bit and ordered the Altec product. I was very impressed with the quality of the sound. I wholeheartedly recommend!

From the moment that I opened the box, I was in love, it seemed. Yes, I’d seen the dock displayed in a store, but I hadn’t seen how conveniently it folded (even able to store the remote inside itself while closed). I thought that not only does it do everything I want for a radio in my bedroom, but it’s very conveniently portable in the event I ever need to travel with it. Unlike others in that category, it comes with a Li-Ion battery, making it exceptionally light and offering extended unplugged performance.
My main planned uses of the product were (A) as a clock radio, (B) a regular radio, (C) to listen to music streamed from iTunes via my Airport Express, and (D) to listen to selected iPod items when going to sleep. Essentially, I found that it does (B) and (C) best. Whereas my prior radio had iffy reception on some stations with the antenna extended, this one gets a strong signal everywhere without having to extend the antenna. It easily and beautifully streams music (via auxiliary input) and allows for much greater enjoyment of my iTunes library and selected streaming stations. I’ve caught myself singing and dancing more since adding this device.
Unfortunately, that only solves half of my goals. It essentially fails at the first goal, which is the ability to wake up to NPR. The device only functions as an alarm clock when you set the iPod specifically for that (meaning that you can wake up only to the iPod). To do so also means that the system must remain on all night. Of course, if you’ve attempted to go to sleep listening to the iPod, this will indeed be the case. Although the iPod itself will go to sleep, the system doesn’t recognize this and remains on. Aside from the obvious wasting of energy, it poses a much greater problem for me in that mode: it’s simply far too bright. There are no brightness adjustments at all, either manual or automatic. I had to find items to cover up the bright blue lights, and that can then make it hard for the remote to work. I still find that I wake up in the night and feel around for the remote so I can turn the system off.
If you are looking to use the system in the daytime (or at least when the lights are on), it will probably work very well for you, whether you’re using the radio, listening to your iPod, or using external input. You may still find the remote very disappointing for your iPod, though, as it operates only limited functions (pause, stop, play, advance, or previous; there’s no option to navigate menus, change playlist, etc). Also, it does not come with an insert for the 3G Nano. You can use the insert that comes with the Nano, but it doesn’t fit snugly into the system.
